Images from Viking Star’s shakedown cruise show elegance of new ocean ship

Viking Ocean Cruises’ Viking Star has shown off its features on a shakedown cruise ahead of its christening in Bergen next month.

Accommodating just 930 guests, the new ‘small ship’ includes panoramic windows in the Explorers’ Lounge, with its wraparound veranda, as well as the 360-degree Promenade Deck.

The stunning blond wood, glass and white marble three-deck Atrium features as part of the understated, elegant decor found throughout the ship. Onboard facilities include the serene Wintergarden, where the waiters will serve an elegant afternoon tea, the Infinity Pool and the relaxing Spa.

There are five categories of staterooms, ranging from Veranda Staterooms to Explorer Suites. All include king-size beds, large showers, LCD televisions and private verandas. There are 14 Explorer Suites offering spacious accommodations including Viking Explorer beds with luxury linens, and priority shore excursion and dining reservations.

These stunning rooms are the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing, while there is also the lavish Owner’s Suite personally designed by Viking Chairman Torstein Hagen.

Torshavn, the piano lounge, will feature live performances from the resident pianist, while plans for the next excursion can be anticipated in the thoughtfully curated ship’s Library.

The new ship offers more al fresco dining than any others at sea. The Restaurant, serves a wide range of culinary offerings made with locally sourced ingredients. The Chef’s Table offers tasting menus complete with wine pairings, and there’s also the specialty Italian restaurant Manfredi’s.

For fitness, the Main Pool, complete with retractable roof, is perfect for doing laps, while the Sports Deck on Deck 9 offers more traditional gym equipment.

The infinity pool is a glass-backed pool at the ship’s stern and in the evening, the space transforms into the Aquavit Terrace®, where you can dine al fresco and admire the views.

Wellness and serenity on board draws on the holistic philosophy of Nordic culture: in the Snow Grotto, snowflakes gently fall from the ceiling, and there’s also a traditional sauna.

For more entertainment on board you can take in an exciting show in the ships’ main theatre on Deck 2 or enjoy a film in one of the ships’ two movie theatres.
